The town was originally split into three areas Higher Town, Quay Town and Middle Town but these are now combined.

The wide tree lined Parade and surrounding streets have many Edwardian-style buildings and boast several properties designed by the architect W J Tamlyn.

In the 18th century Minehead was a major fishing port but as this declined tourism took over as the main industry.

May Day is the start of a local tradition which involves the ‘hobbyhorse’ which tours the streets accompanied by musicians for four days. This local tradition dates back to the 15th century and continues to be popular with tourists to this day.

The Southwest costal path runs for 630 miles and is the longest National Trail in the country; it starts from the seafront in Minehead where you will also find the West Somerset Railway – a heritage steam railway which attracts many visitors throughout the year with festivals and steam weekends.
