Promoting vibrant and viable small towns

Buntingford Town Centre Management Team

Representing Buntingford

Buntingford is a medieval Market Town with a Royal Charter Market dating back to 1360. It is currently held on a Monday but was originally granted by King Edward III for a Friday.

The present town was bypassed by the A10 in 1987 and is 13 miles north of the county town of Hertford within the East Herts Council area and 22 miles south of Cambridge.

It was due to the London-Cambridge Ermine Street that the old town was a perfect coaching town with many inns and alehouses and a leather and tanning industry. We have records of the 13 lost inns of Buntingford with photos and drawings of 12; the 13th seems to have been lost forever. The town centre still has many historic building within its conservation area.

The present population is approximately 5,500 inhabitants which has shown a 50% increase in the past 40 years when Sainsbury’s opened up a major distribution depot at the southern entrance to the town, although this has recently closed on a permanent basis although seasonal requirements bring it back into use.

The Buntingford District covers a large rural area with 18 villages within its catchment area and the small retailing sector of the town plays an important part in this close-knit community life.

Somerfield and Co-op both have mini-superstores within the town and there is an important and very well used Library. There is a free town centre Car Park and although we are not immune from Parking Attendants, we do have High Street and Market Hill free parking of between a half and one hour.

A Heritage Centre, open on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month is located in the Manor House (Town Council offices where Tourist Information is available on Mondays to Fridays from 0900 – 1700 hrs). The Town Centre Management Team office is also located in the same building and the office is serviced part-time. A Classic Car Event is held on the 1st Saturday in September each year. There is also a bi-annual Carnival held on the mid Saturday of June – next one 2006.
