Promoting vibrant and viable small towns

Alford Town Council

Representing Alford

At the eastern foot of the Wolds nestles the market town of Alford. Although steeped in history with the 14th century St Wilfrid’s Church, the 17th century Manor House and the 19th century five-sailed windmill, this town also has a very art-based part to play in Lincolnshire life.

Over 25 years ago the town held its first craft and music festival and ever since they have grown from strength to strength. Alongside the weekly summer craft markets, craftsmen from all over the country gather during the Whitsun and August Bank Holiday Festivals selling their works of art. Musicians from all around play at the August Festival and also at the Jazz Festival; dancers and singers, poets, Morris Dancers and street entertainers participate and ensure that every visitor has a fabulous experience.

The breathtaking Five-Sailed Mill, built by Sam Oxley, offers a wonderful welcome into the town. Its creaking sails gently turn, milling the grain that is used to produce the delicious cakes and snacks available in the Tea Room and Mill Shop. The Manor House Museum on West Street is a fine place in which to learn more about the town’s history. Situated in a beautiful thatched house, you will see history re-created with exhibits of a Victorian Schoolroom, Pharmacy, Veterinary Surgery, Cobbler’s Shop, Dairy, Pantry and a Police Cell.

Completed a town healthcheck and action plan in summer 2003. The Partnership is presently developing working groups to deliver projects to improve skills for young people, sustainable transport and to enhance the craft market in the town in conjunction with developing a farmers’ market. Projects developing the Memorial Garden, a park in the town and the renovation of the Manor House, a Tudor building featuring a museum continues to be supported by the Alford Community Partnership.
